Cygwin Mac

broken image

You may not realize it, but your Mac already runs a variant of UNIX. You can easily access a terminal window to use your computer's built-in UNIX functionality with the 'Terminal' program (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app). You may want to make a shortcut to this program in your Dock, since you'll be using it a lot from now on. Similarly, you can use your Mac directly to log into a UNIX server, and even to transfer files to/from a UNIX server.

Enabling X11-Forwarding (Popping up windows from the UNIX server)

Mac equivalent to cygwin? For my class we do work on cygwin and notwpad , I was wondering if there was a way I can get this on my macbook or if there is something equivalent that I can use. Unix/Mac/Linux OS Malware Report #: 30. Agenda TLP: WHITE, ID# 30 2. Executive Summary. Origin of Modern Operating Systems. Overview of Operating Systems o Desktop o Servers o Super Computers o Mobile o Attack Surface and CVEs. Malware Case Studies o Drovorub. What is Cygwin Cygwin is: 1. A collection of tools which provide a Linux look and feel environment for Windows. A DLL (cygwin1.dll) which acts as a Linux API layer providing substantial Linux API functionality. Cygwin is not: 1. A way to run native Linux apps on Windows. You must rebuild your application from source if you want it to run on. Cygwin/X is a port of the X Window System to the Cygwin API layer for the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. Cygwin provides a UNIX-like API, thereby minimizing the amount of porting required.

Your Mac comes with another program that enables you to display graphics from programs running on a remote UNIX/Linux server, called 'XQuartz' (Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app). On older OS X systems this program was called 'X11' and was located in essentially the same location. If neither of these programs are currently installed on your Mac, you can download XQuartz from the Mac App Store (free).

To enable forwarding, just run XQuartz/X11 before starting Terminal. If a xterm window pops up from XQuartz/X11, you may close that window before starting Terminal, since Terminal is more feature-rich than XTerm (my opinion). Once XQuartz/X11 is running, when you log into remote UNIX servers (as shown in the next section) you should be able to display remote graphics.

Logging into an UNIX server

The standard protocol for logging into a modern UNIX server is through using a Secure SHell (SSH) client. OS X has built-in SSH functionality, through the 'ssh' command in the Terminal.

To use ssh from the Terminal:

  • Open Terminal.
  • At the command line, type
    ssh username@hostname -CY
    or
    ssh username@hostname -CX
(the Y vs X difference is minimal, and will not affect your user experience, just remember to use one of them). Here, username is your user name on the UNIX server, and hostname is the name of the UNIX server. For example, I could log into the UNIX server titan.smu.edu with the command
    ssh reynolds@titan.smu.edu -CY

For additional information on using ssh, type

man ssh

(short for manual) in the Terminal window.

Transferring files to and from a UNIX server (terminal)

You may copy files to and from a UNIX/Linux server in the Terminal window as well, using the 'scp' command. The syntax is either

scp file_to_copy_from username@hostname:file_to_copy_to

or

scp username@hostname:file_to_copy_from file_to_copy_to

depending on whether you want to copy the file to or from the UNIX server. For example, suppose I have a file named 'file1' in my home directory on titan, and I want to copy it to the current directory on my Mac (the one the terminal is in, type 'pwd' to see which directory you are in if unsure):

scp reynolds@titan.smu.edu:file1 .

or

Cygwin

Cygwin Macro

scp reynolds@titan.smu.edu:file1 file1

would give the desired result. Suppose now that I have the file 'file2' in the current directory on my Mac that I want to copy to my home directory on titan:

scp file2 reynolds@titan.smu.edu:

or

scp file2 reynolds@titan.smu.edu:file2

would do the trick. For more information on the 'scp' command, type man scp in the terminal.

Fetch

One of the most popular graphical file transfer options in OS X is the program Fetch. This is not a free program.

To use Fetch, fill in the UNIX hostname (e.g. titan.smu.edu), your username on that host (e.g. reynolds), and your password on that host, then click 'Connect'. You will then see a display of your remote directory on the UNIX server. Transfer files by dragging them to and from the Finder.

FileZilla

A free alternative to Fetch that may be used from OS X, Windows and Linux is is FileZilla. To install FileZilla in OS X:

  • Download the FileZilla client for Mac OS X from here.
  • Open the FileZilla installation file to unpack the application.
  • You may run Filezilla.app from the Desktop, or you can instead move it to your Applications folder.

To use FileZilla, fill in the fields for the host (e.g. titan.smu.edu), your username on that host (e.g. reynolds), your password, and the port (use 22 Free download cable hdmi rca audio boulanger. for SFTP), and hit [return]. You should notice two file browser windows open up, the browser on the left is on your computer, the browser on the right is from the UNIX host (e.g. titan). Transfer files by dragging them from one computer to the other with your mouse.

Cygwin is a free software to provide Linux and Unix environment, tools, and libraries in Windows operating systems. Cygwin is also called an emulator because it translates Linux system calls into Windows type systems calls. Cygwin generally used to run Linux tools like ssh, SCP, bash, X11, GCC in the Windows environment. Cygwin support following operating systems

  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8
  • Windows 10
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2012
  • Windows Server 2016

Installation

Download Installation Files

We will download installation files from Cygwin site. There is two type of installation files

32 bit – x86

32 bit installation file can be downloaded from following link.

64 bit – x86_64

64 bit installation file can be downloaded from following link.

Start Setup Of Cygwin

We will start installation by clicking the downloaded files. To install we need Administrator privileges.

In this screen we see information about installation like version, architecture.

Installation Method

We have three option to get installation files.

Cygwin predefined macros
  • Install from Internet will get files from repositories and install
  • Download Without Installing will only get files and do not install
  • Install from Local Directory will get files from local disk and start installation.

Choose Installation Directory

We need to choose the installation directory. Default path is good but we can change to the Program Files too. There is also an option to chose which users can use Cygwin.

Download Directory

We will chose where to save the downloaded Cygwin packages.

Select Internet Connection Type

We will select the connection type. For regular network connections Direct Connection is enough but if we use proxy we should provide related parameters with the other options.

Choose Download Site

Cygwin corrupted mac on input

We will choose the site for downloading packages. Prefer physically near sites for faster download.

Update Package Repository Information

Cygwin Mac

Then the package and repository information will be updated from previously selected site.

Select Packages

Cygwin Free Download

Now we are here to select applications, tools, libraries, groups to install.

We can search package name with the Search box or select from the list directly. Packages are grouped according to their functionalities like Admin , Database , GNOME etc. We can select the whole group or single package from the group.

Install SSH

For simplicity we have searched ssh to installation. After search operation the dependencies are resolved and we will click Next

Installation

We install ssh by downloading dependencies packages. Also this is the first installation so the Cygwin will install base packages those are used by a lot of other applications, tools.
